Company History

►Nilar was first registered as a business named Nilar Ply under the names Nilar Briyani and Cold Drink. As the company evolved along with lots of changes in the economy and politics, both local and international, it embraced changes and never-stop efforts, bringing progress. The company's beginnings were humble. A leased shop on Anawrahta Street, Yangon, was the center of the company's beginning. The company was family-owned from the day it started until this day. As time went on, progress took shape. By early 1990, Nilar Holding Limited was incorporated, from just a business name to a company. Then the company's head office was built at the very spot it started.

►The name “Nilar Briyani and Cold Drinks” continued to provide customers with all the best it could offer. Good intentions brought goodness, and the result will be that Nilar Briyani and Cold Drinks have 35 restaurants all over Yangon and plan to go nationwide. In 1995, it started a bakery under the name “Innwa Cold Drinks and Confectionary,” and today there are three bakery houses. Though the food industry was the upbringing of the company, later on it started venturing into other industries. In 2000, the company set up a paper mill under the name “Nilar Paper Mill,” which produces recycled paper for the local market. At the same time, trading was booming, and the company decided to take part and got registered under “Nilar Pulp Paper Co., Ltd.” The company imported everything from car parts to construction iron, consumer products, and many more. The company also exported beans, rice, and fishery products. Along the way, in 2003, the idea of making virgin pulp for rice straw came into focus and started test production. After lots of research and development, the production of high-quality, unbleached rice straw pulp started in 2004. In 2006, when Cyclone Nargis hit Yangon, the mill was heavily damaged and had to be rebuilt. It was when the company decided to stop local production and focus only on pulp production. The trading department started to increase interest in exporting rice, and naturally, surprise agriculture-related items started to surface. The company started fertilizer imports in 2005, mainly with urea, but by 2008, the company started producing -------------- by Paramount. The company started farming in 2010, and now we have the capacity to farm 7,000 hectares.

►In 2007, the company had 700 full-time employees and 100 more part-time employees. To handle day-to-day operations, each company had separate offices. Then they formed a group of companies and changed the names according to the industry in which they were involved. That is when Nilar International Limited became the Myanmar Nilar Foodstuff Company for our food-related products. Then Nilar Paper Mill was changed to Nilar Pulp and Paper Company for our virgin rice straw pulp production. Then Nilar Star Company Ltd. was changed to United Nilar Agribusiness for our fertilizer, farming, and farm machinery services. The humble beginning of a common person brought the company to a height where one couldn’t disregard his achievement. Now the company has 35 Nilar Briyani and Cold Drinks restaurants, 3 Innwa Cold Drinks and Confectionaries, and a centralized production facility that meets international standards with 850 employees. The paper mill employs 200 workers and produces 300 tons of unbleached virgin rice straw pulp every month. United Nilar Agribusiness handles about 10 tons of fertilizer of various kinds and produces 5 tons of rice per season with 280 employees.
